About the Tennessee State Data Center

The Census State Data Center (SDC) program is a State/Census Bureau cooperative program with a mission of providing efficient access to US Census data and products, providing training and technical assistance to data users, and providing feedback to the Census Bureau on data usability, as well as state and local government data needs and operational issues. The State Data Center disseminates Census and other data to the public through a network of over 1,800 state and local agencies, libraries, universities, chambers of commerce, and others. The State Data Centers are the official source of demographic, economic, and social statistics, and redistricting data produced by the Census Bureau.

The Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee serves as the Lead Agency for the SDC program in Tennessee. The remainder of the Tennessee SDC is comprised of 17 affiliates statewide. The goal of the Tennessee SDC is to provide access and education on timely demographic and economic data for the citizens, businesses, and government agencies of Tennessee.

Most Census Bureau data are available through the Bureau's Internet site, The Bureau maintains an interactive site with an online access tool, the American FactFinder, with which data from the decennial census files, the American Community Survey, and many other surveys may be accessed. Another valuable data resource from the Census Bureau is the U.S. Statistical Abstract.  The Abstract serves as a guide to sources of data from the Census Bureau, as well as other Federal agencies and private organizations.
